SOC 2 for startups: a decision guide for your first audit
Most startups facing a first SOC 2 make one real decision before choosing software: will someone else run the readiness work with you, or will your own team run it with a tool? If nobody on the team owns security, an expert-guided tool usually fits; if you have a security lead and a lot of cloud tooling, a self-serve platform with many integrations and a published price may fit better.
Which of the five tools leads for a first audit?
We scored Scytale, Vanta, Secureframe, Thoropass and Comp AI on seven criteria weighted for a first-time buyer. Expert guidance carries the most weight, but price transparency and published integrations count too, and the scores show it: no tool leads every row.
- 1
Scytale
3.9 / 5Compliance automation with a dedicated compliance expert who runs audit readiness, plus built-in audit, a Trust Center and penetration testing as an add-on.
Leads on: expert guidance for a first audit and room to grow after SOC 2.
- 2
Secureframe
3.5 / 5The only published starting price in this lineup, 300+ integrations and an audit partner network.
Leads on: pricing transparency.
- 3
Vanta

What does a first SOC 2 actually involve?
Pick the scope
Decide which systems and which Trust Services Criteria the report covers. Security is always in scope; the other four are optional.
Read the lessonGet ready
Write policies, put controls in place and collect evidence. This is where tools and experts save the most time.
Read the lessonChoose Type I or Type II
Type I looks at control design at one point in time. Type II also tests whether controls operated over a period.
Read the lessonGet audited
Only a licensed CPA firm can issue a SOC 2 report. The software prepares you; the auditor signs.
Read the lessonExpert-guided or self-serve: which path is yours?
Expert-guided
A named expert plans the work, meets with you and manages the audit. Fits teams with no security hire and a customer deadline. In this lineup Scytale describes the most involved version: a dedicated compliance expert with weekly meetings who manages the audit process. Thoropass takes a different route, putting automation and the audit in one company.
Self-serve
Your team runs the programme in the tool, with support when you ask. Fits teams with a security or platform lead and many connected systems. Vanta publishes 400+ integrations and Comp AI 580+; Secureframe is the only one of the five with a published starting price.
Where does each tool lose points?
Every tool here has a weak row. Knowing it early saves a surprise in month two.
| Tool | Weakest row | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scytale | Pricing transparency | 2.6 | No prices; headcount bands per plan and annual allowances are now published. |
| Vanta | Pen testing in the package | 1.5 | Pen testing is not described on the pages reviewed. |
| Secureframe | Pen testing in the package | 1.5 | Pen testing is not described on the pages reviewed. |
| Thoropass | Pricing transparency | 1.0 | No prices and no plans published. |
| Comp AI | Pen testing in the package | 1.5 | Comp AI's pricing page mentions penetration testing as one of the needs that changes what's included; no bundled pen test is described. |
What should you read first?
Questions founders ask first
Is SOC 2 required by law?
No. SOC 2 is a report a CPA firm issues on your controls, usually requested by customers during security reviews. It is common in business software sales because buyers ask for it.
Can software alone get us a SOC 2 report?
No. Software helps you prepare and collect evidence, but the report is issued by a licensed CPA firm after an examination. Some vendors bundle or arrange the audit; the auditor still has to be a CPA firm.
Which tool is best for a startup with no security person?
On our weights, Scytale scores highest on expert guidance because it describes a dedicated compliance expert who manages readiness and the audit. It scores lower than rivals on pricing transparency and published integrations.
Which tool publishes a price?
Of the five, only Secureframe publishes a figure: Fundamentals starting at $7,500/year. The other four ask you to book a demo or a call.
